Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth Extraction PasadenaWisdom teeth can be some of the most painful and problematic teeth in the mouth. Not only do many of our patients not have enough space for them in their mouth, but there are many instances when the wisdom teeth do not erupt properly. When the teeth don’t emerge through the gum properly, it is called being impacted. When the wisdom teeth become impacted, it can cause a whole range of issues and usually requires wisdom teeth extraction. Pasadena patients are often understandably worried and anxious when this happens. In this blog post, we’ll look at some of the symptoms of impacted teeth, and we’ll also discuss the procedure used to repair it. What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Most Pasadena patients are aware that wisdom teeth (also called “third molars”) tend to erupt between the age of 17 and 25. Many patients have all 4 of their wisdom teeth, but it is not uncommon for some patients to be missing one or more.

What should normally happen is the wisdom teeth push up through the gums just like all of your other teeth. But more often than not, patients just don’t have enough space to fit them. In this case, several things can happen with the wisdom teeth.

  1. They come in at an angle towards the second molar or towards the back of the mouth.
  2. They come in at a right angle and grow towards the cheek.
  3. They get stuck in the jawbone.

In all of these cases, the patient will need wisdom teeth extraction. Pasadena patients that have impacted wisdom teeth may notice several symptoms.

The Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Just to be clear, impacted wisdom teeth may not show any symptoms at all. But if the teeth cause infection or other dental issues then they’ll start to produce symptoms like these below.

  • Gums – The infection caused by the impacted teeth will produce red and swollen gums. The gums may even start to bleed or be very sore to the touch.
  • Jaw – The jawbone is another area where patients may experience pain. There may also be some swelling on the jaw at the wisdom teeth sites.
  • Mouth – In some cases, the infection can cause the patient’s breath to smell bad. Some patients may have a foul taste in their mouth as well.
  • Mobility – Finally, there are some patients who may experience difficulty opening and closing their jaw. In these cases, it can become difficult or painful to eat, and patients should immediately get wisdom teeth extraction.

Pasadena patients that are experiencing any of these issues should get in touch with Lytle, Tate & Stamper as soon as possible.
